Shattered Pixel Dungeon arrived on itch.io in April 2023, giving computer and Android players another way to pick up the traditional roguelike dungeon crawler RPG. Development began in 2014, when Evan Debenham started reworking the open-source code of Watabou's Pixel Dungeon; the balance project grew into its own game, published as Shattered Pixel.
Runs are built fresh each time, with procedurally generated floors, room types, enemies, traps, and loot. Play is turn-based: moving, attacking, or using an item consumes turns while the dungeon reacts. Six heroes are available, each with subclasses, endgame abilities, and talents earned during a descent. Debenham has said success depends on player skill rather than unlocked upgrades, so mistakes carry weight and repeated attempts teach the layout, enemies, and item rules.
