Stargunner is a 1996 science-fiction arcade shoot ’em up from Apogee. It puts the player in a heavily armed spacecraft and sends it through rapid scrolling stages filled with enemy formations, environmental hazards and large bosses. The design comes from the shareware-era school of action games: movement is immediate, enemy patterns become more demanding, and a better score is always a reason to make another attempt.

The campaign contains 34 stages spread across outer space, the planet Zile and underwater environments. Those settings change both the scenery and the threats entering the screen, while the objective stays clear: survive each attack wave and destroy the target at the end of the route.

Combat, upgrades and level variety

Defeated enemies leave credits and power-ups that improve your chances in later stages. Credits can be spent on weapons and engines, so progress is not limited to temporary upgrades found during combat. Choosing where to invest adds a planning layer between the fast shooting sections: stronger firepower can clear formations sooner, while engine improvements affect how effectively the ship responds to incoming attacks.

GOG’s official description lists 75 enemy craft and 33 bosses. That variety means the campaign regularly introduces new attack patterns instead of relying on one formation from beginning to end. Stargunner is a single-player experience and does not include multiplayer. GOG lists partial Xbox 360 controller support, so some functions may still be easier to handle with a keyboard.

What does the free GOG version include?

GOG currently lists Stargunner at no cost and shows no offer deadline. The release is DRM-free, which means its offline installers can be used without keeping GOG Galaxy open. Galaxy is optional rather than a requirement for playing the game.

The current listing supports Windows and Linux and includes English audio and text. It does not list macOS or Turkish support. The game runs through DOSBox, while the GOG Preservation Program provides an updated Windows package tested for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Cloud saves are also listed for players who use the supported GOG features.

“No deadline shown” describes the verified product page, not a promise that the store price can never change. Confirm that GOG still displays a zero price before completing the checkout.
